Project: Garden Caretaker

Applicants: Teddy Mernard '16

Historically, during the summer months the Pitzer Garden goes unkept and unappreciated for lack of student presence on campus. This summer however, returning students will find a garden spilling over with the bounty of the Fall harvest, thanks to Teddy's hard work. Follow Teddy, as Garden Caretaker, as he stewards the growth and natural beauty of the land by visiting his blog here.  

Project: Bamboo Bicycles 

 

Awarded: $3,090

Applicants: Sanford Glickman '17, Karl Kiser '16

Students created three bamboo bicycles for a day rental program. These bicycles will be a means of transportation and an eductional tool for sustainable manufacturing. They are created from locally grown bamboo and contain a mix of new and used bicycle parts.

 

 

Hallmark Channel: On Earth Day, the Hallmark Channel’s Home & Family show ran a segment on bamboo, and featured a bamboo bike made by Sandy Glickman, Karl Kiser and Cade Maldonado. Check out the video here (bike content begins at 4:10).

FUNDED PROJECTS: FALL 2014

Project: A Cleaner Tomorrow (ACT) 

Environmental Education for youth in Ontario and Claremont

Awarded: $800

Applicants: Feby Boediarto '17, Shinara Sunderlal, Taylor Novick-Finder '17, Divya Bambawale '17, Sami Rosenblatt '17

ACT is a student-run environmental education program that teaches elementary school students about environmental issues and solutions to these problems. Funding will go to purchasing: classroom supplies such as arts and crafts, field journals, and materials for experiments; workshop materials; transportaion; and staff development.

Project: ReBook

Awarded: $2,000

Applicant: Adin Bonapart

 

A used textbook sale, operating each semester, conserves paper, minimizes redundant transportation emissions, and provides students affordable, convenient alternatives for buying books and textbooks. The ReBook project consists of a 20' campus storage container where the books are held until distributed on the Mounds at the beginning of each semester.
